Okay, so I didn’t do weekly updates, but I learned so much during my no-spend month. Thing one: at some point, you have to stop thinking and start writing. That is a thing I seriously need to work on. It has nothing to do with money, but I suppose it could lead to cash if I took it more seriously. Motivation and other things are an issue. I’ll get to that later. Let’s talk about not spending.
I have no idea how much I saved. I don’t budget. I pay my bills, throw some money in savings, and spend whatever is left. I did go back and glance at my January spending, but I had some extra money in January. It wasn’t a typical month. Brief numbers appear to be that I spent $700 less in February than in January (discretionary). I spent a total of $38.81 in February (again discretionary). I stocked up my food drawer at work so that breakfast, lunch, and snacks were already there. I bought drinks to put in the office fridge (we don’t have a Fridge Theft). I received zero alerts from my bank about the status of any account, and at the end of the month, there was $815 still in the account. I did the math on annual house expenses and found that I need to pay myself no less than $350 a month to cover these expenses. I also need to adjust my withholdings for my taxes so that I don’t owe so much come April.
What’s March looking like? Well, I’m taking a hard look at my credit cards. I have some credit cards that have rewards that are of no use to me. I don’t shop at Dillard’s. A rewards American Express card that gets me 10% off after I spend X amount of dollars is a worthless card to have around. I’m not going to use it anymore. I haven’t decided whether or not I’ll close the account or not. I know leaving it open is better, but I’m not going to be using it so why leave it dangling out there ready for some jackass to steal the number. I dunno. I’m also looking into that House Account. I’m thinking an MMSA account; something with a good APY. March itself will not be a no-spend month. It will be and is shaping up to be, a mindful spending month. I’m preparing to do some house projects and DIY things, and project require tools and spending. I bought some tools for projects on my lists. I have a friend coming to visit, and it’s my birthday month. Maybe I’ll do another no-spend in April.
I’m not going to do weekly updates on this topic. At least, not here. I might mention things on various social media counts, so follow those if you want to see them. I’m not a finical guru and don’t want to be one. Putting words to MacJournal helps me think things through and, another thing I found in February, writing things out helps me have “oh shit” moments.
