Don’t worry, folks, I’m here all semester.
My name is Kelley, and I’m posting from the weird state of Florida. No, I don’t know where Florida Man lives. He just turns up at the most unexpected times. Florida has been my legal residence since my parents moved here when I was two, in 1975. I took an 18-year break from Florida while I was in the Navy and lived in much better places. My last duty station brought me back to Florida for retirement. I moved back to the homestead and took care of my mom until she passed in 2015 and I decided to stay for a bit because, well, it can be interesting around here.
I earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Workforce Education from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale while I was stationed in San Diego. It was one of those job-related degrees that the military looked more favorably upon but it is also boring, and I don’t really want a job in that field. Since I haven’t used up my G.I. Bill, I decided to go back to school and get the degree that I had always wanted from the start.
Southern New Hampshire University was the most appealing option for me quite simply because they have a Master’s in English that doesn’t require me to take the GRE. I researched the school and asked my boss about taking online graduate level classes (she’s in a Master’s program with a different school) and decided to go for it. I’m excited.
My only concern with staying on track is battling my own procrastination. There are times when I would rather do anything else than what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m not sure that this will be a big problem for this program. Previously, when studying literature, I was always ahead of the game because reading and writing about my reading is something that I enjoy anyway. I’m excited about the challenge and look forward to learning with everyone.
