De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising (1989) was another one that I couldn’t find streaming on Apple Music. I, also, couldn’t find the original version streaming any place. I ended up listening to the first 24 tracks of a 30+ listing on YouTube. Yes, the original contained 24 tracks. It’s not as long as it seems. Some of those tracks are only around a minute long and are little spoken interludes.
The group is a hip hop group from Long Island. 3 Feet High and Rising was their first album and a critical, and commercial, success. The album, and the band, were a stand out at the time. Gangsta rap was a Thing at the time and De La Soul style is very much not gangsta rap. While reading about them the phrase “hippie” group came up a few times. I remember the song “Me Myself and I” the most, and not just from my most recent listening. Actually, I don’t think I ever listened to the entire album before. I just remember “Me Myself and I” from its original release. It’s a fun song, as many of the tracks are on the album. You can listen tot he entire 2001 reissue here. I only listened to the original tracks so I can’t speak to the extra 14 songs.
