The Smashing Pumpkins. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear The Smashing Pumpkins is that meme with the rat in a cage, and there’s a note on the cage that reads, “Despite all my rage.” And I laugh. I laugh every time I see that meme. I don’t know why. It’s really not that funny. It’s probably because Bullet with Butterfly Wings is the song from The Smashing Pumpkins that I really like. It’s not on Siamese Dream, it’s on the album that came next.
Siamese Dream is the second studio album from The Smashing Pumpkins and was released in 1993. It hit the Billboard charts at number 10 and sold a shit ton (6 million+) worldwide. I read a few articles calling it one of the best albums of the ‘90s, maybe one of the best of all time. Rolling Stone puts it at number 362. Depending on how long of a list I would make, if I were to make a list, it might not make it. I was in boot camp when the album dropped, maybe that’s part of why I’ve been so indifferent to it. Idk.
It seems the album was fraught with lots of problems, mostly with band members. I’m not sure which issue could be classified as the worst (heroin addiction, two members that had ended a relationship with each other, suicidal depression, and writer’s block) but the album took along time to make and the band was under a lot of pressure. They had been compared to Nirvana, so big things were expected. That’s not much pressure. Nope. Not at all. Siamese Dream scored the band their first Grammy nominations (Best Alternative Music Album and Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal) but they didn’t win any until the next album.
The chances of me changing the channel just because The Smashing Pumpkins comes on is slim. But, I just checked my music library and I don’t own any. I might have to download the song about the rat in the cage.
