366 Probably Not the Last of Johnny Cash

Damn. This is some dark stuff. At least it seemed like it to me.

Am I the only one that has a hard time with labeling Johnny Cash as a country artist? I know that the folk label is thrown is way too and I get that one but there must be a vault of Johnny Cash music I’ve never heard that earns him the country label. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised, it’s not like I’ve sought out all this Johnny Cash. Maybe that folk sound of his is just too folk to be anything other than country. idk.

So, American Recordings is his 81st album. 81st album. Holy shit. Has anyone on this list made more work? I’m going to have to start paying attention to that number now. The entire album is just him and his guitar, sitting in his living room (so I’ve read), and singing songs. A couple of the songs were recorded at a live show at the Viper Room in LA. Glenn Danzig wrote one of the songs specifically for this project. And, according to the internets, it was released by American Recordings which had been Def American, more known for their rap and heavy metal releases. Weird. It was released in 1994 and received acclaim from critics. It was placed on many best of lists for the year and scored Cash a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

It’s some dark stuff. Me likey.
