449 Sister Lovers

Ever hear of Big Star? Me neither. The Internet tells me that they formed in Memphis in 1971. They frequently received exceptional reviews from critics and influenced many other musicians, but they only attained cult status and lacked any commercial success. I suppose this is the story of many great bands. The group broke up in 1974, but reorganized in 1993 with a new lineup. I don’t know that they had any better luck the second time around.

Their third album (originally called 3rd) was re-issued in 1985 and renamed Sister Lovers (PVC, 1978) was actually released after the band broke up. It did not have any commercial success at the time. I don’t know what to think of it. While at times it seems really great, other times I didn’t know what the hell was going on. Also, it’s not good for listening to while cleaning.

Picture is of the 1985 re-issue.
