John Prine. Holy crap John Prine. Folk music can be kinda iffy for me. John Prine is a little bit folksy and a little bit country, at least his self titled debut album (1971, Atlantic) was. There are some pretty heavy topics covered on this album. “Sam Stone” is a song about a drug-addicted veteran, and there are many other references to war on this album. “Paradise” recalls the devastating impact of strip mining for coal. “Hello in There” is a tribute to senior citizens. “Illegal Smile” may or may not be about smoking pot. Prine claims that it isn’t but it’s a really good anthem for pot smokers. Some of the songs and lyrics seem fitting for events that are taking place in society today. I recommend you give this one a listen for yourself.
