Big Star hails from Memphis, Tennessee. For some reason I think it should be from Texas. Okay, it’s the name. The sound fits with Memphis. The band wasn’t around long, at least not the first time around, 1971 - 1974. But 20-years later they gave it another go, from 1993 - 2010, when several members died.
#1 Record (Ardent/Stax, 1972) was the first album. It received high praise but was poorly distributed. It does contain the song “In the Street” which was covered by Todd Griffin as “That ‘70s Song” with additional lyrics by Ben Vaughn it was used as the theme song for the television sitcom of the same name. Cheap Trick also recorded the song and was also used as the theme music starting with season two of the show.
I was never a fan of That ‘90s Show, and it turns out that I’m not a Big Star fan either.
