M.I.A., aka Mathangi Arulpragasam, is an English-Sri Lankan musician known to combine elements of electronic, dance, alternative, hip hop, and world music. She is also a painter and director.
Kala (Interscope, 2007) is her second album. And I’m not sure there are words to describe it. Sure, wiki and Rolling Stone both give me some but I think it’s best to experience this album on your own. I first had a ‘wtf is this” moment. That thought did return a couple of times. The second and third songs also sound so similar that I didn’t notice when one ended and the next started, which is something that I hate. In the end, I’m pretty sure that I enjoyed it but I was still scratching my head. Seriously, go listen to it for yourself.
