403 Southern Fried Free Bird

Things I like about Lynyrd Skynyrd:

  • Gimme Three Steps
  • Southern Man

Things that make me sick:

  • Free Bird

Yes, I admit it. I hate Free Bird. HATE IT. And, I live in Lynyrd Skynyrd land so if I listened to the radio, I would hear it all the time. Luckily, I have satellite radio so I don’t have to hear it often. But for this project, I subjected myself to it.

If you don’t already know, Lynyrd Skynyrd, hailing from Jacksonville, FL in 1964, made southern rock a thing in the ‘70s. Don’t ask me about the spelling. I don’t know. The band, basically, came to an end when three members died in a plane crash in 1977. In 1987, surviving members got back together for a reunion tour and they still tour today.

Pronounced ‘Leh-‘nerd ‘Skin-‘nérd was the band’s debut album in 1973. It features my fav “Gimme Three Steps,” along with “Simple Man,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” and the dreaded “Free Bird.” The album peaked at number 27 on the charts in 1975. Today, it’s sold over 2 million albums internationally.

I’m indifferent to the album. I really like one song and I could do without the rest. That attitude might get me kicked out of Florida, and I’m okay with that.
