According to Wiki, The Go-Go’s “made history as the first, and to date only, all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts.” This statement made me wonder about The Runaways. I think the catch is the “to the top of the Billboard album charts” part. The Runaways weren’t a commercial success as a band.
Anyway, Beauty and the Beat (I.R.S., 1981) is their debut album and contains the hits “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat.” The band produced three studio albums before breaking up in 1985. An album of new material was released in 2001 but only made the charts in the US at number 57. Beauty and the Beat is a fun album and it’s easy to see why it was a popular club album in the ‘80s.
